      Keep brain healthy

      Everyone's brain health is different; Genetics, lifestyle, and age can all influence how well your brain works.  Keeping your brain healthy is essential for overall well-being and cognitive performance. If you have specific worries or conditions concerning your brain health, it is always a good idea to seek personalised advice from a healthcare specialist. Incorporating the following practices into your everyday routine can aid in the maintenance and improvement of your brain health over time:

       

      1. Stimulation – challenge brain with puzzles, games and new inputs

      2. Exercise – consistent physical exercise will heal the brain and keeps it fit

      3. Proper diet – eat foods with protein, unsaturated fat, fruits and vegetables

      4. Safety – avoid head trauma by wearing helmets and seat belts

      5. Sleep habits – brains need around 7-8 hours of sleep to process & recharge

      6. Learning – keep your brain young by learning new things like a language - curious mindset will keep brain engaged and adaptable.

      7. Switch routines – change habits, it will surprise the brain and turns-off auto pilot activities.

      8. Be social – interacting will trigger brain processes and lowers depression

      9. Manage Stress – try relaxation as stress exhausts brain and hormones

      10. Read books – words and stories reduce the risk of cognitive decline

      11. Avoid substances – alcohol, drugs and smoking are bad for brain health

      12. Digital detox – too much screen time impacts sleep and will overwhelm the brain

      13. Health care - diabetes, high blood pressure, and excessive cholesterol can all have an impact on brain function. Work with your healthcare provider to successfully manage these illnesses.

      14. Be organized - Maintain strong organizational habits, use calendars and to-do lists, and create goals to keep your brain engaged and effective.

      15. Be positive - Maintain a good outlook and an optimistic attitude: A positive outlook and an optimistic attitude can contribute to greater mental and emotional health, which in turn improves brain health.

Course Summary: B.Tech ESE (HR24) – English Language Proficiency


This course is designed to equip first-year B.Tech students at Hyderabad Institute of Technology and Management (HITAM) with essential English language skills, focusing on students from ECE, MECH, and EEE streams. With a curriculum that addresses the needs of engineering students, the course emphasizes the development of vocabulary, grammar, reading, and writing skills, ensuring students are proficient in both academic and professional communication.


Course Structure:

- Unit I: Introduction to basic vocabulary and grammar, using R.K. Narayan's "Toasted English" to explore language in context. The unit also covers common grammatical errors and effective reading strategies.

  

- Unit II: Focuses on words that are often misspelled or confused, enhancing students' understanding of homophones, homonyms, and homographs. Sudha Murthy's "Appro JRD" provides the literary context for this unit, with grammar lessons on noun-pronoun agreement and subject-verb agreement.


- Unit III: "Lessons from Online Learning" by F. Haider Alvi et al. anchors this unit, which delves into advanced vocabulary from foreign languages and addresses common grammatical mistakes such as misplaced modifiers and incorrect tense usage.


- Unit IV:  Abdul Kalam's "Art and Literature" forms the basis for exploring redundancies and clichés in communication, with students learning the SQ3R reading technique and essay writing skills.


- Unit V: The final unit, based on Subroto Bagchi's "Go, Kiss the World", prepares students for the use of technical and business vocabulary, focusing on writing technical reports and enhancing overall communication proficiency.


Learning Outcomes:

By the end of this course, students will:
