Assertiveness - Empowered Communication
Assertiveness is a mode of communication – appropriate, honest, direct, self-enhancing, self-expressive, self-confident, receptive, patient, thoughtful, respectful, sensitive and empathetic to the emotions of all involved. Assertive people have the following characteristics:
- Feel free to express feelings, thoughts, and desires
- Initiate and maintain comfortable relationships with [other] people"
- Know your rights – be positive
- Control emotions. This does not mean to repress the feelings. It means to control and talk about in a reasoning manner
- Willing to compromise with others, rather than always wanting their own way ... and tend to have good self-esteem“
- Enter friendships from an 'I count my needs to I count your needs' position"
- Make eye contact and use apt body language with calm and firm voice
- Stand up for your self – believe you deserve
- Your feelings, rights and needs are as important as everyone else’s
- Reduce anxiety and stress – become a better manager
