Course Summary: B.Tech ESE (HR24) – English Language Proficiency

This course is designed to equip first-year B.Tech students at Hyderabad Institute of Technology and Management (HITAM) with essential English language skills, focusing on students from ECE, MECH, and EEE streams. With a curriculum that addresses the needs of engineering students, the course emphasizes the development of vocabulary, grammar, reading, and writing skills, ensuring students are proficient in both academic and professional communication.

Course Structure:

- Unit I: Introduction to basic vocabulary and grammar, using R.K. Narayan's "Toasted English" to explore language in context. The unit also covers common grammatical errors and effective reading strategies.

- Unit II: Focuses on words that are often misspelled or confused, enhancing students' understanding of homophones, homonyms, and homographs. Sudha Murthy's "Appro JRD" provides the literary context for this unit, with grammar lessons on noun-pronoun agreement and subject-verb agreement.

- Unit III: "Lessons from Online Learning" by F. Haider Alvi et al. anchors this unit, which delves into advanced vocabulary from foreign languages and addresses common grammatical mistakes such as misplaced modifiers and incorrect tense usage.

- Unit IV:  Abdul Kalam's "Art and Literature" forms the basis for exploring redundancies and clichés in communication, with students learning the SQ3R reading technique and essay writing skills.

- Unit V: The final unit, based on Subroto Bagchi's "Go, Kiss the World", prepares students for the use of technical and business vocabulary, focusing on writing technical reports and enhancing overall communication proficiency.

Learning Outcomes:

By the end of this course, students will:

1. Gain a comprehensive understanding of both explicit and implicit meanings in texts.

2. Demonstrate improved communication skills in both formal and informal settings.
